Fontin & Company was also present at the Bavarian Energy and Water Days 2026 in Regensburg. The event organized by VBEW (Association of Bavarian Energy and Water Industries) and the Bavaria Regional Group of DVGW (German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water) impressively demonstrated the challenges facing operators of critical infrastructure in the fields of energy, water, and power grids today.

Our impression is that the energy transformation is by no means exclusively a question of expanding renewable energy. Rather, issues such as security of supply, resilience, grid stability, digitalization, and the protection of critical infrastructure are moving to the forefront.

The following points were particularly discussed:

• Grid capacity as a new bottleneck
  Demand for grid connections for renewable energy, storage, electromobility, heat pumps, and data centers is growing much faster than available capacity in many cases.
• Digitalization and controllability of infrastructure
  Smart meters, digital twins, and data-based grid control are evolving from future topics to operational prerequisites for stable grid operation.
• Hydrogen as a system integrator
  Hydrogen is viewed not only as an energy carrier, but as an essential building block for storing renewable energy, providing secure capacity, and increasing the #resilience of the energy system.
• Hybrid threats and KRITIS protection
  “We are not at war, but we are no longer at peace”: Cyberattacks, physical attacks, drone activities, sabotage, and supply chain dependencies illustrate the extensive requirements that resilience places on operators of critical infrastructure. The need for action extends far beyond technical protective measures.

A key insight from the event for us was that the greatest challenges are increasingly arising at the interfaces between infrastructure, organization, technology, and security.
